TURNING BEEP SOUNDS OFF IN XP

In many cases, XP machines actually have louder speakers, but we've found a lot of variation in sound in XP boxes. You can try the following steps to remove the beeping sound.

Right-click My Computer and choose Manager. When the Computer Management window opens, click Device Manager. Now, choose View, Show Hidden Devices. In the right pane of the window, double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers. Next, right-click Beep and choose Properties.

When the Beep Properties dialog box opens, click the arrow at the right side of the Device Usage list box and choose "Do not use this device (disable)." Click OK, and then restart the computer when prompted.

There is also a setting that you can add to the Legacy environment that generally works:

SET STSOUNDS=FALSE
or
SET STSOUNDS=OFF
